Researchers at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center have discovered a breakthrough experimental treatment for lung cancer.
The treatment is part of a lung cancer vaccine that exposes the body to a protein that the lung cancer produces, and the protein production helps the body build up protection against that cancer that is attacking it.
Not only does this new vaccine prove that the immune system can be engaged in the fight against cancer, but the vaccine can also help fight to keep away deadly cancers permanently for some patients.
Certain types of lung cancers can be caused by exposure to asbestos, a known human carcinogen. Asbestos cancers, such as mesothelioma, may be incurable today, but with treatment breakthroughs such as this, mesothelioma and other asbestos cancers can become a thing of the past.
